I've been wondering if ticks serve any purpose at all besides being a nuisance. Can they actually be useful in the ecosystem, or are they just a pain we have to deal with while enjoying the outdoors? What do you all think?

Can ticks be useful? Yes. In fact, some scientists use the tick population to measure the health of the ecosystem they monitor. If the tick population is up then they know the small animal population is thriving, while a decrease in ticks and small animals causes concerns.

Ticks are food for many species, e.g., opossum, wild turkey, chickens, woodpeckers, and guinea fowls.

Ticks carry diseases that are harmful to humans and our pets, so I'll keep dosing my dog with Nexgard and checking myself for the pests.

RustyPine17, take a couple of minutes by going to Introductions to tell us a bit about yourself, your sporting interests, and how this forum can be useful to you in a give and take way.
