Sitting here majorly Pis****ed off because a lot of lead bullets got poached out from under me at the last minute in an online auction. I shoot lead in .45 Colt. I'm sitting here contemplating casting my own. I've just ordered Lyman's book on casting. Anyone got any pearls of wisdom for someone brand new to casting? Are lead wheel weights still readily available? Alternatively, what are good sources for lead for casting? Recommendations on melting pots, molds etc? Thanks ahead of time.

I got my start casting with whatever lead I could find and a simple pot. Trust me, clean lead and keeping the heat even makes things way simpler

A Lee mold, some kind of ladle, a Lee sizer and a cast iron pot from a yard sale is all you need. A lot of wheel weights are zinc now a days, but there are still plenty of lead ones. Start with where you bought your car and or where you bought your tires. You might have to buy pizza for the crew or maybe just bring a new five gallon bucket. It's recommended to have separate pots for smelting and casting but that isn't necessarily necessary. I use sawdust and candle wax as flux. Keep it simple to start and then the sky is the limit. Feel free to message me on here with questions.

Appreciate the info. I was wondering if wheel weights were still an option since they've gone to using different materials. I'm getting asked about what I want for Christmas and I now have some ideas. I like Lee stuff, and it looks like their molds will be the way to go. Lyman is showing out of stock on every mold they make. Go figure.
