I was checking out the .22lr offerings at my local Academy Sports and came across 500 round bricks of Monarch 40gr. RN .22lr for $34 and some change. I'm not familiar with Monarch, but at under $35/500 it could be a decent budget plinking ammo if it's any good. Does anyone have any first hand experience with this particular ammo or Monarch branded ammo in general?

I haven't used Monarch 40gr RN .22LR, but at $34/500 it's good budget plinking. Try one brick first and expect a bit more variability than premium ammo

Monarch is Academy's line of store branded ammo. I believe that their .22lr is currently made in Brazil by CBC, (Magtech). CBC is one of the largest ammo manufacturers in the world.

I can't say that I have a lot of experience with it. I've only shot a dozen or two rounds out of the box that I purchased. That was just casual plinking with my Heritage Rough Rider. But so far so good. No failures of any kind, and was accurate enough to clank the 6" plates I was shooting consistently.

I think budget .22LR brands like Monarch often get way too much credit. For serious shooting or reliability, you're better off spending a few extra cents per round on proven, higher-quality ammo
