Planning a trip to visit family and trying to figure out the best route. I want to bring a firearm along, but going through New York State seems like a hassle with their strict laws. Avoiding NY adds so much extra drive time, and I'd rather not make the trip longer than it needs to be. I've heard a few stories about how others handled similar situations, but I'm curious if there's a solid plan out there that doesn't involve a huge detour. Has anyone else gone through this and what did you end up doing?

That's interesting -
To legally travel through New York with a firearm, you must:

  • Be traveling from a place where you are legally allowed to possess the firearm to another place where you are legally allowed to possess it. This means both your origin and destination must allow you to have the firearm.
  • The firearm must be unloaded. This is a non-negotiable requirement.
  • The firearm and ammunition must be kept in separate, locked containers. A locked glove compartment or center console is generally not considered sufficient. Hard-sided cases designed for firearms, secured with a lock, are recommended. Ammunition should be stored separately from the firearm, also in a locked container.
  • Travel must be continuous and uninterrupted. While "continuous" is subject to interpretation, it generally means making only reasonable and necessary stops for things like gas, food, or overnight lodging. Deviating from your route for sightseeing or extended stays can jeopardize your protection under FOPA.
  • The purpose of your travel must be legal. You cannot be traveling to commit a crime or otherwise engage in unlawful activity.

Makes it a lot easier to travel, and not as worried about things.....just don't stop in some areas.

I see only two ways around these Draconian rules:
1. Leave your gun at home
2. Don't travel to or through those states that you have no CCW reciprocity.

The northeast and west coast are NoGo areas for me. Recent travel to DC meant I left my gun at home. Not going to a DC jail over that.
Recent cross country trip had me detour through Paducah KY to avoid southern IL.

I go to Maine a good bit to visit family - so no choice there (at leastnot willing to make the other choice). Flying is a hassle with a firearm.
