About forty years ago, my brother-in-law, our friend George, and myself were going to try the new deep frying method to cook the Thanksgiving turkey. Deep frying a bird was not my cup of tea, but the dinner was at my sister's home and my BIL was put in charge.
I knew this was going to be a mess when George and my BIL secured the bird in the basket without drying it thoroughly before lowering it in the boiling peanut oil. I watched from a safe distance as the oil boiled over the slide and made its way down the driveway. Too much oil in the pot and a cold wet bird makes for big mess. I retreated to the house to tell the kids to stay away from the driveway.
Those two guys didn't time it right either, so when the bird was craved its skin crackled and dust flew from inside. The sister was pissed!!! The dinner she had spent hours working on became a meatless meal. Thankfully, there were enough tasty side dishes, so no one left the table hungry. The pies were great. That day is still remembered and talked about at Thanksgiving get-togethers.
