I'm getting my nephew into shooting and I'm thinking a .22 rifle is the way to go. But there are just too many choices. Should I get him a single-shot, a bolt action, or a semi-auto? What do you reckon is best for a ten-year-old who's just starting out?

I started at the age of 16 with a bolt action 22 Marlin knock off from Sears. Still have it and never regretted the purchase. Very accurate and rewarding to shoot. Inherited an almost new Winchester model 190 semiautomatic 22 several years, but it’s not as accurate as my bolt action and is much more difficult to take down/reassemble for cleaning. I own other calibers in bolt action and lever action, but the 22 bolt is still my “go to” for casual relaxing fun and inexpensive plinking. Obviously, for a 10 year old, rifle weight and length of pull are significant considerations for a training weapon.

I got my grandson a Rossi 22/410 combo. I was so excited! It’s a break action with interchangeable barrels. His thumb isn’t strong enough to pull the hammer back , the 410 kicks too much, and the safety is confusing. Worst first gun ever. I would ho with what ever 22 bolt action is in your budget.

Recommended .22 Rifles for Kids

When selecting a .22 rifle for children, it's essential to consider safety, ease of use, and size. Here are some of the best options:

I got this from DuckDuck Search Assistant...

Top Choices

Rifle ModelTypeFeaturesPrice Range
Savage RascalBolt-actionLightweight, single-shot, great for beginners$115 - $153
Keystone Arms CrickettSingle-shotCompact, available in fun colors$150 - $200
Ruger 10/22 CompactSemi-automatic10-round capacity, versatile$255 - $300
Henry Mini-Bolt Youth RifleSingle-shotLightweight, fiber optic sights$200 - $250
CZ ScoutBolt-actionShort stock, good for woods and trails$300 - $350

Key Considerations

  • Action Type: Bolt-action rifles are often recommended for beginners as they require deliberate loading and shooting, promoting safety and focus.
  • Weight and Size: Choose a lightweight rifle with a shorter length of pull to ensure comfort and control for younger shooters.
  • Safety Features: Look for rifles with simple mechanisms that are easy to operate and clear.

Additional Tips

  • Start with a single-shot rifle to teach kids the importance of each shot and gun safety.
  • Consider purchasing a rifle that can grow with your child, such as those with adjustable stocks or modular designs.
  • Always prioritize teaching firearm safety and proper handling techniques.
These options provide a solid foundation for introducing children to shooting sports

I would recommend either a bolt action or break action as a first gun. Safer and easier to teach the fundamentals of gun safety and gun handling. You could use a semi-auto but I would highly recommend loading only one round in the magazine at a time. It's safer and you will save a lot of ammo.
