I tightened them down hard thinking it was good and I crushed the scope tube, ever break something from over-tightening?

Torque specs exist for a reason, I learned that lesson the expensive way myself. Tight enough is good, gorilla tight is costly.

Been there...easy mistake. Torque specs exist for a reason, a small wrench saves expensive lessons.

I once destroyed a scope doing pretty much the same thing. Thought tightening everything up would help. I use a torque driver now every single time because that mistake still stings to remember.

Not uncommon. Have heard of some of the old-school gunsmiths calling similar destruction done by folks as them wanting to 'get it farm-tight'. I think they were alluding that some people work on everything like it was a tractor.
