I once destroyed a scope doing pretty much the same thing. Thought tightening everything up would help. I use a torque driver now every single time because that mistake still stings to remember.
Not uncommon. Have heard of some of the old-school gunsmiths calling similar destruction done by folks as them wanting to 'get it farm-tight'. I think they were alluding that some people work on everything like it was a tractor.
